Hey all it’s been awhile since we updated our blog.  Gonna be some exciting stuff happening in 2013.  New record, videos, shows and tours.  We spent a lot of time refining the sound of the two piece Curse, recording the full length at Red Room Studios in Seattle and Litho this last year.  Going through a crazy amounts of riffs and song ideas (not to mention amps, guitars, and microphones) and picking the ones that we felt were the most authentic.  It wasn’t easy but the recording and live shows are finally up to our standards and we are ready to unleash the new Curse of the North.  We will be putting out free two song samplers from the new record soon, so keep an eye out.
Happy New Year to all!  Hope to see you out there at shows.

An update!

Been a while since we updated the old recording blog. But after some time were about to go back into the studio to finish the final songs for our record. 4 new songs are written, and they may be the best yet. Faster, heavier, and more in your face. These 4 songs will definitely be some of the gems that end up on the first COTN full length. If you havnt checked out samples from the first session, you can download 2 songs at www.curseofthenorth.com

I cant wait for us and everyone else to hear the finished record. After we finish these 4 and give the whole thing a proper master, its gonna be off to the races promoting the crap out of this!

working song titles:

delirium

sparrows

the wastelands

death of a good man

Day 4 - Lots of Guitars

Sitting in the lounge listening to Christiaan lay down a bunch of guitar tracks. Tone sounds mean and huge. Some of the songs we did demos of we did super quick and put almost no time into back in august when we did them. Hearing properly recorded versions(even without vocals at this point) of them is awesome. Songs like “Voices In The Well” and “Red Doom” were baby songs back in august. We were literally working out major kinks the week of demos. Hearing those demos back brought new perspective and caused us to make even better changes to them. “Voices In The Well” has been one of my favorite songs since the first riff came about several months back. Now hearing the song with everything but the solo and vocals on it. Im super stoked. Sounds extremely energetic and big. And i know once we get to mixing, its gonna get killllller! -Nick

Plowing through a long day of drums here. Got some pics to share with ya of the room, the songs were doing in this first session, and if you can decipher them - matt’s notes on a drum take. I think the sounds of the drums so far have really settled well. and after making a bass switch yesterday, my tracks were 10 times easier and smoother than on saturday. looking forward to finishing the last couple of my songs today. Onward to guitars and vocals! - Nick

Its 9pm and were in the middle of the getting bass done. I’m listening to takes on “Oblivion” and dude the rhythm tracks sound thick. I’ve haven’t recorded to tape since the last time I recorded at Litho. Which is kinda funny because three out of the four people involved in that project are involved in this one but that was a decade ago. So I missed how low end comes out on tape. Nick is using another 70’s p-bass. So far theres three in the studio and when remember only being one around. They might be breeding. -Pat

Came in early to get a taste of how the rhythm guitar tracks were going. Working on some internet stuff for the band while Christiaan lays down some extremely mean sounding guitars. That Verellen Skyhammer amp is trully perfect for doing the high gain punchy guitar sound were going for. Like a slightly more intense version of the guitars on “…And Justice For All”. Its funny how on 2” analog tape as you record you can really feel the record take shape as you go along. On pro-tools i feel like you can have something during basic tracks that sounds somewhat like the direction you want it to go. Then during and around mixing its not really what you envisioned things would turn out like. Hearing Chris doing the guitar tracks to the album version of “The Horsemen” right now, the demo version seems silly to listen to. Drum parts have changed during various parts of the song. And the overall tones of the bass and guitar just sound meaty and warm. Real excited, more later! - Nick

Finished up the basics for “The Horsemen”. It took a litte bit to warm up to the song but after a couple of takes. I made out like a caveman and nailed it. That’s it for drums today. Now I get to watch Chris and Nick lay down some tracks. -Pat
